On this segment of Advice From the Pros, best-selling author and leadership expert, David Burkus, discusses the best ways to reconnect with people you previously met at a business event.
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
What is the best way to reconnect with someone that I met at a recent networking event?
David Burkus: I mean, the best way to reconnect with people depends on what you talked about, right? If you offered an introduction, then obviously in the next 24-48 hours, you need to actually take action, give that introduction or whatever action you committed to. If you didn’t, then as simple, “It was so great to meet you and connect over our shared love of X,” and hopefully there was an X because you asked a bunch of questions that uncover that shared interest.
And then, I mean, that’s again in the first 48-72 hours, and then after that, the beautiful thing is if you take your real interest in that person and you understand them more beyond just their business of what they do, then you could call it the universe. You can call it serendipity, whatever you want to call it will find ways to be your excuse to reconnect with that person three or six months later. If you find out that you both love the Falcons, then on first game of the season, you can think to send that person a quick message. You go, “Hey, I was thinking about you as I was watching the game today. I hope you’re well.” Or if you find out that they had some infatuation with a B list movie celebrity, and then that person is in the news. You can forward that article and say, “I was thinking about your this.” It only happens though if you’re interested in someone.
