In the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, American Express and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation have introduced the Small Business Hurricane Recovery Grant Program, committing $5 million in grants to help small businesses rebuild.
Announced on October 31, this initiative aims to provide 1,000 small businesses located in states such as Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee with grants of $5,000 each. These funds can be utilized for essential disaster recovery expenses, including rent, utilities, payroll, inventory, equipment, and infrastructure. Businesses meeting specific eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply, with the application window closing on November 17.
The devastation from Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in late September, caused extensive flooding and damage. According to estimates from North Carolina’s Office of State Budget and Management, Hurricane Helene alone inflicted approximately $53.6 billion in damages within the state, including $41.1 billion in direct damages, $7.6 billion in indirect damages, and $4.8 billion in potential investments for mitigation and strengthening efforts. Additionally, the storm led to the loss of 229 lives, with other southeastern states similarly affected. Just two weeks later, Hurricane Milton struck as a Category 3, adding to the region’s damage and recovery challenges.
American Express Corporate Affairs Officer Jennifer Skyler emphasized the company’s commitment to helping small businesses recover and thrive, stating, “We are dedicated to providing small businesses in the region with the resources they need to recover, rebuild, and thrive.” Additionally, American Express plans to enhance its hurricane recovery efforts by donating $1 for every purchase made on an American Express Card at qualifying small U.S. businesses during Small Business Saturday, which falls on November 30.
U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation President Michael Carney commended American Express’ efforts, stating, “Local businesses don’t just weather storms – they help entire communities rise above them. American Express’ generosity helps us transform these moments into renewal, coming exactly when Main Street needs it most.”
