How Jeff Hopeck veered from Secret Service to business success

What do golf clubs, kettlebells, and protecting the President of the United States have in common? For Jeff Hopeck, they’re milestones on his extraordinary journey. A former Secret Service officer turned entrepreneur, podcaster, and marketing agency owner, Jeff shares how his diverse experiences have shaped his approach to business on the latest episode of The Small Business Show. From standing guard at the Oval Office to launching Killer Shark Marketing, Hopeck’s story is an inspiring testament to resilience and innovation.

Jeff Hopeck’s journey began in college, where an entrepreneurial spirit led him to sell golf clubs on eBay. A chance encounter with a wealthy retiree provided an incredible opportunity: three truckloads of golf equipment valued at $100,000. This early venture taught Hopeck the rewards of hustle and seizing opportunities and the lessons of financial risk when a stock market misstep left him with just 86 cents in his account.

These formative experiences ultimately shaped his resilience, which he carried into his next chapter: joining the U.S. Secret Service. After 18 months of rigorous training, Hopeck earned a position as a federal officer, serving in roles that included standing guard at the Oval Office and traveling internationally for advanced security work. He describes these moments as awe-inspiring, saying, “Never once was it just the Oval Office—it was incredible every time.”

While stationed at the White House, a book by Jack Canfield, The Success Principles, reignited his entrepreneurial spark. A pivotal moment came when he read, “The time is now,” prompting him to pursue his dreams. Hopeck combined his Secret Service training experience with a novel idea: redesigning the kettlebell. Collaborating with a contact in India, he developed a smoother, powder-coated version with ergonomic handles, catering to a niche fitness market.

Fast-forward to today. Hopeck owns Killer Shark Marketing, a dynamic agency that helps businesses thrive through innovative strategies. He also hosts The Jeff Hopeck Show: Conversations with Interesting Humans podcast, which features notable guests and engaging conversations about overcoming challenges and achieving greatness.

Hopeck’s multifaceted career underscores the importance of adaptability and the courage to pivot when inspiration strikes.

“Success is about seizing the moment. If you don’t act now, you’ll always find another excuse to wait. That lesson changed everything for me.” – Jeff Hopeck.
