When reflecting on his journey, Duke credits his drive to his early inspirations, particularly Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte, as well as his experiences during the time of segregation. Despite the challenges, he found his calling and success, including major roles in films like Commando (1985) and American Gigolo (1980).
With a desire to learn more about the business, his career transitioned from acting to directing. Duke asserts that directing is not just about the creative process, but also about the management process. He adds the three pillars of the management process include:

He recalls learning from both his successes and mistakes, including a humbling experience where he forgot his lines due to personal struggles with alcohol and drugs.
