On this week’s episode of the Atlanta Small Business Profile, our host Ted Jenkin sits down with Hunter Cluthe, the owner of William & Reed Academy. William & Reed is a fully accredited, private college preparatory school that provides an alternative to public schools and other expensive private schools.
After spending nearly 20 years as a public high school math teacher, Hunter noticed that his students and fellow teachers were feeling burned out and unenthusiastic about school. So, he decided there had to be a better way. Due to its flexible class schedule, 40 percent of the student population at William & Reed Academy are competitive athletes. Former public school students also make up a large portion of the student body. Hunter has found that students need more individualized attention and focus.
Unlike public schools, which have average classroom sizes of 35 students, the William & Reed Academy caps their class sizes at 16 students, making for a more efficient school day. Hunter also opened a tutoring center in the past which gave him the necessary business background like bookkeeping, HR, and taxes, which ultimately paved the way for what would later become the William & Reed Academy. For Hunter, staying within his industry of expertise was a natural and successful transition.
