Being Resilient: How to Change Your Story and Reframe Your Mindset – Anne Grady, Best-Selling Author

As an entrepreneur, it’s crucial to manage stress and loss in a healthy and productive way, in order to grow and thrive. Ask yourself, are you strong enough to overcome the challenges you face in business and in life? In this segment, we welcome Anne Grady, CEO and President of the Anne Grady Group, communication expert, and best-selling author of Strong Enough: Choosing Courage, Resilience, and Triumph. Anne is here today, to tell us why it’s so important to have the determination and resolve to change your story and reframe your mindset.

As Anne puts it, she stumbled into entrepreneurship. She had her life planned out as a trainer and mother, but it didn’t go quite to plan. Her son was diagnosed with severe mental illness, and in 2011 she started her training and development firm. Her goal was to consult businesses on their communication and leadership skills through various obstacles. She also began speaking across the country about resilience, emotional intelligence, and practicing mindfulness.

resilienceShe then published her latest book, Strong Enough: Choosing Courage, Resilience, and Triumph, after undergoing several physical ailments including a tumor of her salivary gland, six weeks of radiation therapy, a broken foot, and a damaged cornea. Due to her expertise in communication, she was asked twice to speak at TEDxSt.Louis. It was then when she researched the scientific findings of resilience and was fascinated by the studies. So what is resilience? Anne describes it as, “Your ability to get back up after you’ve been knocked down.”

Her book was inspired by the culmination of her experiences and became a guide to overcoming self-defeating behaviors, reacting and responding to stress, and strategies to making you more resilient.

We all experience stress at work. Whether it’s losing a client or a sale, or not reaching a goal. We actively try to avoid stressors, but research shows that once you make it through an obstacle or challenge, you get post-traumatic growth, and are to use the lessons learned to propel yourself forward. Take risks, instead of playing it safe. Put yourself outside of your comfort zone. Anne explains, “Making meaning out of difficult events is one of the best ways to build resilience.”
