Hard Truths: The Power of Positive Reinforcement

If one of your employees does something well, that you want to see more of, you have to let them know about it. On today’s episode of Hard Truths, Dave Anderson talks about the power of positive reinforcement.

positive reinforcementThe Hard Truth is there are a lot of managers out there who don’t believe in giving their employees positive reinforcement. They believe that once they give their employee a pat on the back, they’ll become lazy and complacent. While that might be true on a rare occasion, 98 percent of employees would benefit greatly from positive reinforcement.

If we take a close look at behavioral science, performances that are rewarded and reinforced, get repeated. It’s that simple. If you see your employee giving an exemplary performance, don’t wait to reinforce it. The best time to do it is right after the behavior is witnessed, and then to recognize them in a specific way. That will carry more meaning for the employee, and ultimately encourage the repetition of that behavior.

It will also, over time, improve your company culture and morale. No longer, can you plead ignorance to this behavioral science tool. Start practicing positive reinforcement at your business today, and you’ll see the benefits start to roll in.
