How to Increase Employee Loyalty Using the 5 Languages of Appreciation – Dr. Paul White, Psychologist & Best-Selling Author

After studying to become a licensed psychologist, Paul began to focus on improving work relationships in business. Based on the number one New York Times best-selling, The 5 Love Languages, Paul along with Dr. Gary Chapman, collaborated on The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace which outline the following:

  1. Express genuine appreciation to your co-workers and employees: Sometimes leaders have misconceptions about expressing appreciation in the workplace. It’s not primarily about making people feel good. However, when team members feel valued and appreciated, good results follow.
  2. Quality time: Employees not only want quality time with their supervisor to discuss work-related items, but they also want quality time with their friends and family outside of work.
  3. Acts of service: This does not mean rescuing a low-performing colleague. This is simply about doing something that can help their day or week go better. When a colleague is working hard on a time-sensitive task, what can you do to help?
  4. Tangible gifts: In this setting, we’re not talking about compensation or bonuses, but rather getting to know your colleague and maybe getting them their favorite cup of coffee.
  5. Physical touch in appropriate ways: Spontaneous celebration like high-fives, fist bumps, or congratulatory handshakes.
